Innovative off-campus recruiting events were created for UR students

REGISTER HERE

In the coming weeks you’ll be receiving information on the “Career and Internship Connections,” which are job and interview fairs held around the country over winter break. What many students don’t realize is that these events are run completely by the staff of the Gwen M. Greene Career and Internship Center, and were created 13 years ago specifically for UR students. While there are 16 other colleges and universities that participate in the events, UR students every year submit the most applications, receive the most interview offers, and fill the most interview slots.

The Career and Internship Connections include employers and postings for both full-time positions as well as volunteer and internship opportunities! (List of employers by major/career field.)

Career and Internship Connections take place in Boston (January 7th), Los Angeles (January 8th), New York City (January 9th) and Washington DC (January 11th). There is a morning career fair style “Open Forum,” and then scheduled interviews in the afternoon. You can be selected for interviews by applying to specific employers and positions by the December 3rd deadline, or by speaking with the employer at the morning open forum (if they still have any slots left). Go here for a listing of participating employers catergorized by majors and career fields.

Some commonly asked questions about the CICs:

  1. Why should I go? Many companies have scaled back travel and on-campus efforts, and capitalize on events like this to meet candidates. You will meet face-to-face with an actual recruiter at the event, which is much friendlier than an online application black hole.
  2. How do I get there? Travel arrangements and expenses are up to the student, but the events are scheduled during break to give you time to travel if necessary, or attend an event close to home.
  3. What industries/companies are represented? Students from all majors can register. The CICs bring companies from fields including:
    • Communications & publishing
    • Marketing & PR
    • Law, government and international NGOs
    •  Banking, financial services and insurance
    • Business and consulting
    • Education & nonprofit
    • Environment and Sustainability
    • Media & entertainment
    • Health & human services
Because we run the events ourselves, Career and Internship Center staff are very aware of the employers and students participating in the events, and are happy to answer questions. Make sure to ask your counselor, or stop by the office to learn more. The pre-select interview application deadline is December 3rd!

Networking Opportunities at the UR Part 2

Continued from  "Networking Part 1" which included on-campus networking opportunities at the UR.

Assistant Director of Alumni and Parent Relations Career Programs Michelle Marks-Hook discusses other ways we can help you start networking.

Additional Places to find contacts to build your Network
Rochester Career Advisory Network (RCAN)
RCAN is a database of several hundred UR alumni who have volunteered to serve as a resource to current students, as well as alumni. This can be a useful networking resource both for career exploration, for job/internship search activities, and for graduate school advice. Advisors are searchable by career field, major field of study, employer name, job title, and so on. They may be contacted directly via a web form linked from their profile page.

LinkedIn operates the world’s largest professional network on the Internet with more than 175 million members in over 200 countries and territories.  You can find, be introduced to, and collaborate with qualified professionals that you need to work with to accomplish your goals. If you don't have a LinkedIn account, then you are missing out on a major way to make connections.

CareerShift
CareerShift is a very powerful online tool that can pull information from all over the internet and compiles it into useful profiles for networking activities. Lists of contacts can be generated by employer name, geography, industry, and position level. One particularly useful feature is the ability to search by school. Type “University of Rochester” (in quotes) in the “School Attended” field to find alumni who fit specific criteria. Once the list is generated, an envelope icon signifies an email address available in the profile. Phone numbers may also be available on the profiles.

There are over 175 UR alumni that can be found on the Gwen M. Gwen Career and Internship Digest Blog who have volunteered to be contacted by UR students for advice, informational interviews or shadowing.

Student Alumni Networking Nights
Networking Night Events take place in NYC, Boston and Washington, D.C. each Winter Break. The Alumni Relations annual Student Alumni Networking Nights provides an informal venue for alumni and parents to interact with students and alumni seeking career information and advice.

Faculty, professional organizations, classmates/friends
Start with people you already know and feel comfortable reaching out to.  Once you have identified whom you know, it's essential to find out whom they know.  Tell others that you are looking for advice and information on job openings and careers. Let them know about your interests and desires.  Ask specifically whether your contacts know anyone who can help.

It may feel awkward at first to “network” but it will become easier when you practice talking to others about your career goals and aspirations.  Networking is well worth your time and effort for your current career stage and throughout your career.

stop by the Gwen M. Greene Career and Internship Center so we can assist you with your networking efforts.  we offer networking and linkedin workshops as well as individual appointments -- students are always welcome to seek the assistance of a Career and Internship Center professional.
