Maia Ashman, Biology, Continuing Her Education at the School of Nursing

Maia received her bachelor's degree in Biology this month.

I have just been accepted into the University of Rochester School of Nursing's Accelerated Bachelor's Program for Non-Nurses.

At the end of the 12-month program, I will have a BS in Nursing and will take the N-CLEX exam in order to become a Registered Nurse. I hope to further pursue a career as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in the New York City area.

Having worked as a Student Assistant at the Career Center for two years, I developed meaningful relationships with the counselors and felt comfortable relying on them for help with finding internships, writing recommendations, and even dressing appropriately for interviews. My time at the Career Center afforded me irreplaceable information and support from the staff.

Morgan Preziosi, '13, Biochemistry, Accepted into Top Choice PhD Program

At the end of June I will be a PhD student at the University of Pittsburgh's Interdisciplinary Biomedical Graduate Program. The program is through their medical school, and is an umbrella program. This means the first year is undifferentiated and I will be studying all different biological sciences, then after the first year I can pick one of six programs to go into, all related to biomedical sciences. I'm not sure which program I'll go into yet, but I do know that I will be doing cancer research.

I knew I wanted a PhD back in high school, so I have spent four summers in labs, and four semesters as well. This definitely helped me with respects to lab techniques, critical thinking, and to be a competitive applicant.

Although unrelated to biology, working as a Peer Career Adviser for five semesters has taught me invaluable techniques and tips for how to create excellent resumes, cover letters, personal statements, networking notes, and everything else, and I definitely could not have gotten into PhD programs without that knowledge. As for advice, I have three pieces to share:

First, grades are not everything. Those students who maintain amazingly high GPAs but who don't have time for anything else will not be competitive, so make sure you're well-rounded yet focusing yourself on your long-term goals.

Second, go to the Career Center! They have great advice for whatever stage you're at, and will make a flawless resume.

Finally, it's okay to not know what you want to do. I was lucky to know at a young age, but it's not awful if you do not know. College is a time to try everything out, so take advantage. Also, the Career Center has great resources to show you what jobs are out there, and what you can do with your major.

Rachel Wesley, '13, Computer Science, Front End Engineer at Brand Networks

Rachel Wesley considered several opportunities this spring before accepting a position as a front end engineer at local social marketing firm Brand Networks.

She said she initially found out about the company through her faculty advisor.  "I talked to my department chair (Marty Guenther) about job opportunities," says Wesley, who graduated with her bachelor's degree in computer science in May. "She mentioned Brand Networks and I saw that they were going to be at the Career Fair."
Wesley says she approached the recruiter at Career Fair, and, "Everything fell into place from there."
She recommends current students and recent grads network within their academic departments. "Talk to people in your department who know you and know what companies would fit your interests and personality," she says.

Senior Success Stories: Emily Vreeland, '12, Public Health-Health Policy

Emily Vreeland, '12, Public Health-Health Policy, recently accepted a position with RTI International working on their health policy projects in the aging, disability, and long-term care program.  She has deferred her admission  to University of North Carolina Gillings School of Public Health in order to gain some practical experience in her field. At UNC she will pursue a Masters of Science in Public Health in Health Policy and hopes to transition into a PhD program.

Emily has been working with counselors at the Gwen M. Green Career and Internship Center since graduation. Below she offers some tips for her peers.

"After graduation, I took a research assistant position at URMC. I used this opportunity as a stepping stone to build on my undergraduate research and employment experiences, knowing that a lot of health policy/public health graduate programs want you to have full-time work experience before applying.  This experience has been an asset for me as I applied to graduate programs and jobs, not only have I gained 'real world' experience, but it has also helped me to understand my areas of research interest, in addition to what I want from a graduate program, work environment, and in understanding my long-term goals.

When I decided to apply to grad school, I also applied to jobs, to keep my options open.  I had good amount of public health research and employment while I was an undergrad, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to jump straight into a program without gaining some more specific experience in policy analysis first.

As I was applying to programs and jobs, I kept in contact with my honors thesis advisor, and  former supervisors as well as the career center.  They helped me to identify companies and graduate programs that might be of interest to me.  Since graduation, my peers have also continued to be a great resource, I still talk regularly with some of the public health majors that I graduated with, continuing to share our goals and next steps-- staying in touch with them and learning from their experiences in different parts of the country and different aspects of public health has been both helpful and really interesting in seeing how our similar education has taken us so many different ways.

I decided to take the position with RTI and defer my admission to UNC, so that I could gain more experience before beginning my masters and hopefully transitioning into a PhD program.  It was really important to me as I made my decision that I felt as though I was in a  position where I would be supported in my professional growth and development.  In interviewing at both RTI and UNC, I got that impression at all the levels (UNC from students to faculty, RTI from bachelors to PhD level).  Since health policy and public health is such a 'real time' area,  I have always found that I have gotten a lot more out of my coursework when I have had real world experiences to apply my coursework to.

My advice to current students is to look outside your comfort zone, be open to new opportunities and don’t be afraid to ask people for their opinion.  As I was in the application process for both jobs and grad school, talking with program directors and current employees was always the most helpful, they can tell you far more than any website or job description can tell you.  They have the experience with the program or the job, and more importantly these are the people that you will ultimately be learning from or working with so it's important to feel comfortable with them.  Use interviews as not only your chance to shine, but also as your chance to better understand what a company/program has to offer, when you've gotten that far in the process it's their turn to sell themselves to you a little bit too.

Use all your experiences as a chance to learn- you might not land your ‘dream’ job right away (I didn't), but with persistence, staying focused and talking with others about your goals will help you to better understand how achieve those goals,- don’t shut out an experience if it’s something that it seems like you might not want to do, keep an open mind and consider the ways that you can learn and grow from the experience.  Looking back, my greatest experiences were the ones that I thought I was going to dislike, and I learned the most from the experiences I thought were exactly what I wanted and then they weren’t—No experience is a negative experience, every experience is a learning experience.

I have also found that you shouldn’t limit yourself to your major—because of the unique curriculum at Rochester I had the opportunity to take extra statistics and economics classes, combined with my health policy major I’ve been able to put myself in a position where I have been competitive with individuals who might have majored in statistics or economics while in college because of my broad knowledge of health policy- find what it is that differentiates you, make that your strength and play to that.

Class of 2013 Succeeds

Students from the class of 2013 are receiving job offers from around the world and being accepted into top graduate schools. Preliminary results of the 2013 Senior Survey (with 406 responses in) show about a third of senior class respondents have a full-time job, internship or service position lined up and about 35 percent have been accepted into graduate school. About 25 percent are waiting to hear about a job or internship and 6 percent have not yet begun their job search.

As success stories come in, we will share them on our blog. Check back to see if some of your students are profiled. More complete results and a list of employers and graduate schools our students are heading to will be posted on our blog as well.

"While proud of how many students find jobs, internships, and enter graduate study post-commencement, we are more proud that faculty inspired so many to use the Center’s services,"  says Career and Internship Center Director Burt Nadler.

Statistically, we find seniors who graduate without solid plans say they just didn't have time to start the job search while finishing classes. "We continue to offer post- baccalaureate resources over the summer," says Nadler. "I hope faculty members and staff will continue to help us by referring students."

He says his staff will continue to meet with departmental faculty and staff to talk about how we can better work together to help recent graduates as well as remaining students.

Senior Success 2013: Jason Silverstein heads to Columbia University to further his journalism career

Jason Silverstein, a double major in English and Anthropology, has been accepted into the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism where he will begin a Master of Science program this fall.

Silverstein served as editor-in-chief of the Campus Times in 2011, and completed an internship at City Newspaper this semester. After graduation he hopes to pursue in arts journalism or feature writing.

"This summer, I will be working as a full-time features reporter at The Buffalo News, a position I also held last summer. In August, I'll be moving down to New York for a 10-month master's program at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Columbia was the only graduate school that I applied to, for noble reasons (it's arguably the best journalism program in the country) and not-so-noble reasons (it doesn't require the GRE, which I wanted to avoid forever). Amber Graham at the Career Center met with me several times to help with my application, and her patience and support were an essential part of my grad school process.

My advice for upcoming seniors is recognize that nothing at this time in our lives is as final as it feels. Talk to most any adult you admire, and chances are they barely remember what they were doing at age 22. In the long run, the true success stories probably aren't the ones that appear in the Weekly Buzz. Too many seniors lose any sense of modesty about their accomplishments, and it's easy to get caught up in the "success stories" that get paraded around all year. Always keep in mind that, for most students, the greatest successes have yet to come."

Senior Success 2013: Annalise Baird, English major, off to Berkeley Repertory Theater

English major Annalise Baird will be moving to California in July to complete a prestigious 11-month fellowship with the Development Department at Berkeley Repertory Theater. She says this is her first major step toward a career in non-profit arts management.

Baird attributes much of her success to her participation in the Career and Internship Center's weekly Boot Camp this spring.  "It was an excellent way to keep your week structured and moving forward in terms of job searching," she says.

She says her career counselor, Amber Graham, gave her lots of support and encouragement throughout the process, and helped her stay on track. Baird said she would recommend the Boot Camp to all seniors.

"It's nice to be a part of a group of peers in a very similar situation, both for support and advice," she says. "And being held accountable for a different aspect of the job search process each week ensured that I was continually moving forward with my search."

She also attributes her success to the invaluable experience gained through the UR International Theatre Program and The Opposite of People (TOOP).
